I was at the market earlier this week and saw someone putting oatmeal into a muslin bag. An advantage of buying in bulk is to eliminate packaging – but it still requires something to put it in. I’ve been reusing plastic produce bags, but it requires remembering to get them back into my reusable grocery bags. And they do get dirty and well, yucky. So I was intrigued by the muslin bag.
The person with the bag was kind enough to stop and tell me how to make one myself. They can be made in a variety of sizes and are easy to wash between uses. They are constructed from simple muslin with a draw string top – easily obtained inexpensively from a fabric store. I guess the main consideration is the double seams. A raw edge would collect food – so the bag is seamed right-side-out first, and then turned inside-out to seam again.
I’m going to try it out. It seems like a quick project, and a nice way to reduce our waste a little more.
